The SMART injection programme proposes co-funding by countries and donors to bridge the financial and information gap between unsafe and safe injections.


It addresses the different reasons for syringe reuse through four key components.


- Full quantities of safety syringes


- Waste management


- Healthcare worker training

WHY IS IT NEEDED?

According to the World Health Organisation unsafe injections cause 22 million cases of Hepatitis B&C and 230 HIV infections which lead to 1.3 million deaths each year with an annual financial burden of $540 million.
